Pure Offices Leeds Thorpe Park has been fortunate enough to have a beehive and colony of honey bees on site since May 2015.
They were first introduced to the Pure Offices site to help ensure we were doing our bit to ‘save the bees’, and we’ve received a number of jars of delicious honey since then, but we noticed something was a little different this year.
The hive had seemed particular busy, and then at the end of June we noticed a swarm of bees in a hedgerow on our land, and you can see just a small number of these bees in the main photo of this article!
The bees weren’t dangerous or angry, but it was very odd to see them outside of the hive this way, so we contacted our beekeeper and expert, Adrian Burch.
It was only when Adrian attended site that we got the full picture about what was happening, and we thought it was so interesting we had just had to share.
A colony of bees will usually come out of winter with about 6,000 bees (many die over winter) and with the queen (hopefully) intact.
In spring, the colony expands as the weather warms up and flowers and blossoms come in to bloom. At this point, the queen may now be laying over 1,000 eggs a day, so when the hive starts to become congested they will make a new queen, and then the old queen will fly off and take half of the colony with her. They will temporarily hang around in a bush or tree while searching for a new home – and this is exactly the stage we were dealing with in Leeds.
In this case, Adrian took the swarm home and relocated them in to a hive in nearby Headingley, and they are thankfully doing well.
With regards to the hive at Pure Offices Thorpe Park, the new queen should now be mated and have started laying in the hive – so we should be seeing lots of activity at the hive entrance!
The only downside to a colony swarming is that there is little prospect of honey from the hive this year. We can however, remain hopeful that if the colony continues to thrive, we will have a big bounty next year.
